Spillover from strategic industrial investments can create value far beyond the original use case. That was a key message when CelluXtreme took part in Svenskt Näringsliv’s seminar “Defense Investments as Driver of Growth and Innovation.” For CelluXtreme, the discussion points directly to the importance of first customers, industrial collaboration and market access for deeptech scale-up.
Strategic investments and spillover
Strategic industrial investments do not only strengthen capacity in one area. They can also generate wider value through new technology, stronger supplier networks, deeper industrial competence and innovation that reaches new markets.
That is the spillover effect — and one reason why Sweden’s SEK 300 billion defence allocation should also be seen as an opportunity to strengthen innovation, competitiveness and long-term industrial growth.
CelluXtreme’s position
At the seminar, CelluXtreme’s CEO Anna Wiberg discussed how this potential can become reality: through targeted investments in technology and R&D, stronger collaboration between academia, industry and the state, and an ecosystem where smaller deeptech companies contribute alongside established industrial players.
For start-ups and scale-ups, access to a first demanding customer and an initial market can be decisive. That first offtake creates revenue, validates the technology and reduces risk for the capital needed to scale. It also builds knowledge that can lead to new applications, broader market relevance and stronger industrial capability over time.
This is why smaller companies matter in the wider ecosystem. Fast-moving deeptech companies complement established actors through speed, specialisation and new solutions, while larger industrial companies bring scale, experience and market reach.
When that interaction works well, spillover becomes more than a concept. It becomes a path to industrial renewal and long-term growth.
